Beta spring 2027

Find your fast.

A small box that reads the instruments already on your boat and learns your real polar: sail by sail, from the water you actually sail.

Talks to the instruments you already own.

Cross-brand by design. Two NMEA 2000 channels, one NMEA 0183, and Signal K to speak every dialect on your bus. No rip-and-replace.

Brand names belong to their respective owners. Listed for compatibility only.

How it works

The boat always records. The cloud catches up when it can.

Marine connectivity is intermittent by nature. Trim Polar is built around that fact instead of pretending it away, so the data that makes your polar is never lost to a dropped link.

  1. 01

    Plug in

Connect the supplied cable to your NMEA backbone. Signal K normalises every brand on the bus. Fifteen minutes at the nav station, no new displays.

  2. 02

    Sail

Every six seconds the box averages ~29 variables: wind, speed, heading, heel, depth, voltages. One tap records a sail change. Nothing waits on the internet.

  3. 03

    Learn

Ashore, the data becomes your polar: observed target speeds for each sail, each wind strength, each angle, with the confidence behind every number.

What it does

A polar that's actually yours.

Learned, not borrowed

Built from the water you sail, one qualified cell at a time.

No generic VPP. No assumed starting polar. Sail-specific target speeds appear only after enough clean, sustained sailing supports them, and unsupported cells stay blank rather than guessing.

Sail-aware

Every number knows which sails earned it.

One tap records a headsail change or a reef. Separate polars per configuration, without a logbook.

Store & forward

Works when the internet doesn't.

Starlink drops, cell dies: the box keeps logging and syncs when the link returns. Encrypted, resumable, acknowledged.

Boat health

Know your boat is fine, from anywhere.

Batteries, tanks, attitude, last seen. A 12-hour backup battery keeps reporting even when ship's power doesn't.

Reviewable filtering

Data you can argue with.

Every filtered sample carries a reason code. Correct it, and affected trips and polar versions are re-run deterministically.

Your polar

Blank cells stay blank until the data earns them.

Most polars are borrowed from a designer's velocity prediction and never checked. Yours is observed: every target speed carries its sample count, dispersion and recency, so you know exactly how much to trust it.

Hardware

Built for the nav station.

One sealed unit, one cable to your backbone. It listens to what the boat already knows, adds its own motion and power sensing, and keeps a 12-hour reserve so it reports even when the batteries are off.

Beta programme

Spring 2027. 20-30 boats. Real water.

We're looking for sailors who actually go sailing, racers and cruisers alike, with NMEA instruments already aboard. Beta boats help shape the product and are first to their own polar.

  • Hardware, cable and install guide shipped to you
  • Web account with vessel home, data viewer and polar coverage
  • Direct line to the team; your feedback sets the roadmap
  • Founding-member terms shared with accepted boats before shipping

No spam. We only write when there's something real to say.

Questions

Straight answers.

Something we missed? Ask in the beta form and we'll reply.

01Does it replace my instruments or displays?

No. Trim Polar listens to the NMEA 2000 / 0183 bus you already have. Your existing displays, autopilot and sensors keep working exactly as before. It adds logging, sail context and remote monitoring on top.

02Do I need internet on the boat?

Not to sail, and not to record. The box logs locally and holds everything in an encrypted queue. When Starlink, cellular or marina Wi-Fi is back, it uploads in resumable batches and only deletes local copies once the cloud has acknowledged them.

03What boats does it work with?

Any sailboat with NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 instruments: wind, speed, heading and GPS at minimum. The beta favours 30-50 ft cruiser-racers that get sailed regularly, because the polar needs miles.

04Will it tell me how to trim?

Not in the first version. V1 shows what your boat actually does: observed target speeds by sail, wind speed and angle, with the confidence behind each cell. Recommendations come later, once the data supports them.

05Who owns the data?

You do. Each boat has its own identity and certificate; access is owner-only. You can download or delete your data at any time. Anonymised polar contribution across boats is opt-in, never default.

06What does the beta cost?

Beta pricing and terms are finalised with accepted boats before anything ships. Applying commits you to nothing.
