Privacy policy

Trim Polar is a small box (the Polar) that reads the instruments on your boat, a cloud service that stores what it uploads, and an owner portal and mobile app for pairing boats and viewing data. This policy explains what we collect through those, why, and the choices you have.
What we collect
Account details. Your name, email address, and the boat or team name you choose when you sign up. If you sign in with Google or Apple we receive your name, email address and an account identifier from them. We never receive your Google or Apple password. Apple may give us a private relay email address if you choose to hide your email.
Boat and instrument data. Once a Polar is paired to your account, it uploads logs about once an hour. These contain readings such as speed, heading, wind, depth, water temperature, battery state and GPS position (latitude and longitude), along with the Polar’s nine-digit MMSI and timestamps. Position data shows where your boat has been, so we treat it as personal information.
Preferences and activity. Your notification and privacy settings, and a basic audit log of account actions such as pairing a Polar.
Camera. The mobile app asks for camera access only to scan the claim code on your Polar. Images are processed on your phone and are not saved or uploaded.
Technical data. Our servers keep standard request logs (such as IP address and time) for security and to keep the service running.
How we use it
- To run your account, pair your Polar to your boat, and show you your data and polar.
- To send notifications you have asked for, such as when an upload arrives.
- To secure the service, prevent abuse, and fix problems.
- To improve how Trim Polar works.
We do not sell your personal information and we do not show advertising.
Who can see it
Your boat data is visible to the people on your account. If you turn on the sistership or support-access options in your privacy settings, the matching data is shared with those groups, and only then.
We use a small number of service providers to run Trim Polar: Google Cloud hosts our servers and database (in the United States), Google and Apple provide sign-in, and an email provider sends account emails. They process data for us under their own terms and may not use it for their own purposes. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and boat data while your account is active. When you delete your account, your sign-in details and personal profile are removed and your account is deactivated straight away. Boat and Polar records that belong to your team account are retained under that account, and we remove them on request.
Your choices
- Delete your account in the mobile app under Account, or email us.
- Ask for a copy, a correction, or deletion of your data, including your boat data, by emailing us.
- Control sharing and alerts in your privacy and notification settings.
- Revoke camera access at any time in your phone settings.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections, passwords are stored hashed, and access to your account data is limited to your account and the few people who run the service. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children
Trim Polar is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above and, for significant changes, let you know in the app or by email.
